What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are cloudy areas that form in the eye’s natural lens, leading to blurred vision, haze, and difficulty seeing at night. They often develop with age, but medical conditions, injuries, or long-term use of certain medications can also contribute. Left untreated, cataracts can greatly impact independence and daily living.

When to Consider Cataract Surgery

In the early stages, cataracts may be managed with stronger prescriptions or better lighting. As vision worsens, surgery becomes the only reliable solution. Signs it may be time include:

  • Cloudy or hazy eyesight that interferes with daily activities
  • Glare or halos at night that make driving difficult
  • Trouble reading or seeing fine details
  • Frequent prescription changes

What Is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus develops when the normally round cornea becomes thinner and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. This irregular curve prevents light from focusing correctly on the retina, leading to blurred and distorted vision. The condition often appears in the teenage years or early twenties and can steadily progress unless treated.

Common Symptoms of Keratoconus

Patients with keratoconus may notice:

  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Sensitivity to light and glare
  • Difficulty driving at night
  • Frequent changes to glasses prescriptions
  • Sudden clouding of vision

What Is Corneal Cross-Linking?

Cross-linking is a treatment that affects the cornea, the clear front part of the eye. In keratoconus, the cornea warps and thins into a conical shape, scattering light and making the vision blurry or distorted. In cross-linking, drops of vitamin B2 (riboflavin) are instilled into the eye and treated with a special ultraviolet light. It stabilizes collagen fibers in the cornea to

prevent them from warping again.

Who Can Benefit from Cross-Linking?

Keratoconus patients or patients with another form of corneal ectasia are the most common candidates for the procedure. Cross-linking does not repair damaged tissue but can stop the decline, protecting vision prior to the deterioration of the disease. Patients who have noticed repeated changes in glasses prescriptions, increasing blurredness of vision, or difficulty seeing at night may want to stop by for a consultation to determine if cross-linking is appropriate for them.

What to Expect During Treatment

Cross-linking is performed at the office and typically takes about one hour. Under numbing drops, the epithelium (the top of the corneal surface) may be carefully removed to allow riboflavin to pass through. UV light treatment follows. The patients may be sensitive to light or tender during the recovery time, but they can resume normal activities in a few days.
